This is a question where you may expect an answer along the lines of, “well this will vary depending on whomever you may ask, everyone will have a different answer because all music and art is subjecti… blah blah blah.” It’s actually much more simple than that (in my opinion).
If music makes you feel, then it is good music. Even if it isn’t good music, like that wetleg band or the 1975. (disclaimer – i actually don’t care either way for wetleg or the 1975, but it’s not the greatest music ever made is it (in my opinion !). also i actually find matty healy quite funny even though he is clearly just a bellend with rich parents.)
But for someone, somewhere, wetleg and The 1975 are the two most revolutionary, talented and important bands in the world (weird I know). And that’s alright.
Those same people will look at my favorites and scoff and look down their nose at me. And that’s alright.
It’s alright to prefer wetlegs first album (cba looking up the name of it, probably just called Wetleg) to The Low End Theory by A Tribe Called Quest, or Original Pirate Material by The Streets. Well… it’s not, but you get my drift.
**Just a quick interjection here: There is already much more Wetleg content on this website than I ever imagined there being. I do apologise (to both the people who don’t want to hear about wetleg, and to wetleg themselves for being mean about them 😥 sorry).**
This may already seem all over the place. And if you think that, I have two things to say to you. Bare with me, it will circle back around. And get over it. I’m sat here in the architectural triumph which is Liverpool Central Library (look it up) with absolutely zero idea what my fingers are about to make appear on this laptop, leave me alone alright.
Anyway, enough berating other people’s taste in music, i’ll allow you to berate mine now.
So what makes music, good music to me? It’s the same as what makes you like wetleg (last time mentioning them i promise). It makes me feel. Whether it’s a certain lyric that speaks to me, or a drum beat that makes my head slightly bounce up n down, or a bassline which makes me wanna have a lil groove all on my own. Or maybe it’s a guitar riff which brings out my inner metal-head, or maybe i’m in a dingy basement somewhere and a DJ is making me move in ways I never knew I could.
It’s not about complex time signatures, or how many genres they can blend into one song, or even if they are using a sitar (who doesn’t love a sitar?). Music is good music if it makes you feel.
I remember being 14 or 15 and having my older sister laugh at me because my playlist would venture from oasis, to galantis (remember them?), to tinie tempah, all the way to bloody Little Mix. I was a right slut for Little Mix.
Now, truth be told, I haven’t listened to Little Mix or Galantis for at least 6 years. But, at that time in my life, for whatever reason, they resonated with me. People my age were out listening to Drake or the newly emerging mumble rap (just realised I should’ve used Drake instead of Wetleg, oh well). Not me. Give me Perry, Jade, and the other two over Drake any day of the week.
Why have i moved on from talking about wetleg to talking about Little Mix, and what has any of this got to do with my original question? Honestly, no idea. Fun though init.
Let this be a warning for what the majority of this website will look like. Lots of rambling without actually answering anything. Don’t expect much technical talk, either. This isn’t about that. It’s more about the beauty and mysticism of music in a world full of confusion and hatred. Proper wanky I know.
Truth is, all music is good music. It just needs to find YOU at the right time in YOUR life.
Let me end on this, what makes music, good music, to me and to you?
Well, this will vary depending on whomever you may ask. Everyone will have a different answer, because all music and art is subjective.
I told you it would circle back around.
Until next time (if there is one). Ciao for now.
