Welcome to the newest series on JacksJukebox, ‘Thought of the day’. It’s pretty self explanatory. A short-form article which you can read on Twitter or Instagram without even leaving the app, perfectly tailored for yous who can’t be arsed reading 1000 word articles. I’m here for you.
As you can see, we start things off with talking about the greatest human being of all time, maybe. Matt Berry. Sir Matt Berry? You might be thinking, well isn’t this a music website? Matt Berry is an actor isn’t he? He is, and a great one of that, but what some people don’t know is he is also a great musician.
But let’s chat about the most distinctive thing about him first. That raspy, sexy voice. Whether it’s the Moneysupermarket.com adverts or the voiceovers for Absolute radio, he grabs your attention. The way he elongates markettttttt is otherworldly. Truly sensational.
That unique voice of his instantly makes all of his characters comedy gold. Whether it’s Steven Toast in ‘Toast of London’, or Laszlo in ‘What we do in the shadows’ or Douglas Reynholm in ‘The IT crowd’ OR his role in ‘Garth Merengi’s Darkplace’. You get it, the list goes on and on.
But why’s he featuring on a music website. Well like I said earlier, you have got to check out his music if you haven’t already. He’s released nine studio albums. His sound is jazz mixed with experimental folk with a hint of an electronic feel. The two songs I would recommend to get a grasp of his sound are ‘Beatmaker’ and ‘Take my hand’. Check them out.
Not only is it his studio albums in his repertoire. He also produced all the music for his shows, ‘Toast of London’ and ‘Snuff Box’.
And here’s a fact of the day for you, he also contributed to the Strictly Come Dancing theme song, playing the guitar. Bet you didn’t know that.
So whether it’s adverts, radio, TV or music, Matt Berry has his hand in all of it. There’s not many people who can boast that, let alone excel in every single one of them.
One last point. I was recently listening to Bob Mortimer on the ‘Off Menu’ podcast. Once a year, Bob, Matt Berry and Reece Shearsmith go out for a meal. What I would give to be a fly on the wall for that. Just a little tidbit for you.
So there’s my argument for Matt Berry being the greatest human. If you have someone you think is better, please do let me know, I would love to hear you try argue against Sir Matt.
