The last month or so has seen a pretty meteoric rise for ‘The Last Dinner Party’. The release of their debut album has been backed up by winning the Brits Rising Star award. But of course, being an all-female band n all that, it’s come with its fair share of criticism.
In similar vain to Wet Leg and Boygenius before them, they have been bombarded with claims of being an ‘industry plant’. What even is an industry plant? It seems this term has been labelled at any new band that pops up in recent years. You weren’t aware of them before they got abit of mainstream attention? OH they MUST have famous parents. Or maybe because they sound abit southern and posh for your liking, they MUST have no talent.
But guess what, The Last Dinner Party (TLDP) are pretty f-ing good. I went into their album thinking it’d just be another Wet Leg sorta sound, not for me personally. BUT it’s something different. It’s a grungy ABBA sound with a hint of Sparks. Personally, I’d much rather an industry plant look and sound like them, than an X-Factor contestant from 10 years ago (sorry Joe McElderry).
Let’s say Amy Winehouse popped up today, she’d face the exact same claims. “Oh look at this girl from rich parents who attended The BRIT School, who does she think she is??” She’s more talented than 99% of musicians around, that’s who she is.
The enchanting lead vocalist of The Last Dinner Party, Abigail Morris, made a valid point about their fast rise recently, “I watched the Oasis documentary last night, and I was like, ‘Oh my god,’ because it’s a year after their first gig and they’re releasing their debut album. They weren’t industry plants, and neither are we.” Touché.
I dare you to go on Reddit and have a scroll through some of the posts about TLDP. In fact here’s a little peep through the keyhole.

Let me know your guesses on who the next ‘industry plant’ is going to be !! Any all-female indie band is probably a good guess.
Final note, give me The Last Dinner Party over a 1975 or catfish and the bottlemen any day of the week. Female indie superiority !
