Ranking the top 50 (fifty!) greatest debut albums of all time

40. Frankie Goes To Hollywood – Welcome to The Pleasuredome

Welcome back.

Honestly this should be higher. It’s definitely better than the next few albums coming up. ‘Relax’, ‘Two Tribes’ and ‘The Power of Love’ all on a debut album. Most bands would kill to have just one song of that caliber on their debut. Whilst writing this I really do think it should be top 20. Not changing it now tho, soz Frankie.

Let’s skip forward a few more here. Who really cares about the 30s, we’re all here for the top half aren’t we.

39. Lady Gaga – The Fame

38. Jeff Buckley – Grace

37. The Killers – Hot Fuss

36. The Smiths – The Smiths

35. Tracy Chapman – Tracy Chapman

34. Bille Eilish – When We All Fall Asleep, Where Do We Go?

This was a late entry. I already had 49 albums picked out, needed one more. You’d think it’d be ranked 50th. But I listened back to Billie’s debut and I gotta say. The whole album is great. You might be thinking “Is it really better than Jeff Buckley’s ‘Grace’ or The Smiths debut?” Well… yeah, it is. And if you don’t believe me, be my guest, go and listen to those 3 albums. You might still disagree, but just know that you’re wrong.

33. Gorillaz – Gorillaz

“Rock The House”, “19-2000”, and of course “Clint Eastwood”. Damon Albarn put a statement down following Blur. After arguably losing the media-manipulated ‘Britpop war’ with Oasis, Mr. Albarn was bold and brave and ushered in a unique, exciting new project with Gorillaz, whilst the Gallaghers continued to release bland, uninteresting and tired albums. Gorillaz was a sign of the Blur frontman moving with the times, and over 20 years later it continues to sound just as fresh as ever.

32. Jimi Hendrix Experience – Are You Experienced

I class this in the same category as the Sex Pistols debut, albeit slightly better. I do believe ‘Are You Experienced’ is overrated by some. Although a strong album, I don’t agree with the sentiment of being one of the best ever. Is it one of the most iconic and recognisable? Maybe. The first tune, ‘Purple Haze’, is an unbelievable opener but maybe it peaks too early.

31. Adele – 19

Speaking of peaking too early, ’19’ is by far Adele’s best release, in my opinion. Obviously she just got bigger and bigger as time went on, but I see ’19’ as a direct continuation of the sound of Amy Winehouse. You could tell me ‘Chasing Pavements’ is prime Winehouse and I’d respond with “Well obviously”. Great album just missing out on the top 30.

Join me on the next page to see what’s even better than the likes of Adele and Jimi Hendrix.
